Instructor: Hofler M/W/F 11:15am – 12:10pm
This course picks up right where Introduction to Fiction left off, with an additional twist. Not only will we study intermediate techniques of fiction writing, we’ll also focus on what story and place mean in this global world. Why do some books get translated into dozens of different languages and become international bestsellers? What qualities do certain stories possess that allow us to relate to characters from cultures completely different from our own? How can we write fiction with a global vision? Through craft-based exercises, theory, and studying translated works, we will broaden our definition of contemporary fiction. Ultimately, we will examine what connects all humans: great story-telling.
