This course provides an introduction to the many literary and critical theories that have shaped central and contemporary conversations about the study of literature and culture.  After a general overview of contemporary critical priorities, we will read a number of sample texts (often excerpted) from the history of criticism and theory.  The course will conclude with an in-depth reading of at least one significant recent work of theory.  Along the way we will also examine a short selection of cultural texts to help us ground our discussions of theory in particular acts of interpretation.
