This is an introductory course in film studies. Topics covered or at least touched upon include film technology, the film industry, and film style in relation both to technological changes and to cultural and historical environments. The course also introduces film history, focusing on important films, directors, and major film movements from the beginning to the present (well, almost to the present). Other topics included are mise-en-scène, cinematography, film editing, film sound, narrative techniques, movie genres, and critical theory and practice. The course consists of video, discussion forums, textbook and external readings, and film screenings. In addition to weekly Discussion Boards and Writing Assignments, the course requires a final paper of some five to seven pages about a movie assigned by the instructor.
