This course will be an examination of how gender is refigured in key dystopian literature like Herland and the texts that follow it like The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power, among others. Within these texts, we will look at what it means to be “woman” or “man” or even “human” and the interplay between these common constructs and others.
We will also consider how some of these texts, despite their age, speak to not only their specific historical moments but also our current social moment.
