English 2007 surveys pre-20th-Century American literature: from Puritan prose to literature of the early republic to well-known writers and texts of the American Renaissance to early writers of realism and naturalism. Insofar as the course has a theme, it will be the place of the individual in American society. Course requirements: Brief reading quizzes, three exams.
