During this course we will examine a variety of texts by women writers that fit basically into the category of science fiction. We will look at both short stories and novels. Most of the texts that we will look at are concerned in some way with a discussion of gender, and we will examine these texts in terms of critical theories about gender. However, the texts in question contain other themes as well, such as anxiety about technology, and we will examine the texts from a variety of critical angles. In addition to an anthology of short fiction, we will look at The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin, The Female Man, by Joanna Russ, Where Late the Sweet Bird Sang, by Kate Wilhelm, and Lilith’s Brood, by Octavia Butler.
