Instructor: Alessi | MWF 11:15 AM – 12:10 PM

This course will explore trends, themes, and techniques in contemporary historical fiction by closely examining the Western novel. In reading recently published fiction from a diverse range of authors set during the American frontier, students will discuss the craft of writing historical adventure, romance, and mystery; how to tell alternative and fabulist histories; and the motivations and purposes of historical fiction. Students will comment on classmates’ work and produce their own short fiction set in another time.
