What makes a piece of writing funny? And how, as writers, do we make our audience laugh? These questions will guide us as we read writers like Patricia Lockwood, Mike Birbiglia, Raven Leilani, George Saunders, and Rebecca Schiff, among others. Although our course is organized by form, we will further break down our readings into comedic categories—the darkly comic, the absurdist, the satirical, and more. As we read and respond to this wide variety of humorous texts, we will craft our own comic poetry and prose, workshopping one essay, one poem, and one short story. By the end of this course, we will not only be able to articulate what makes a story or essay funny, but we will also be writing funny ourselves.
