Research Course

In this seminar we will inquire into the cultural significance of gospel rewrites in 20th- and 21st-century literature.  We will lay the conceptual foundation for our discussions with some preliminary readings in 1) recent theories of rewriting in general and 2) the history and criticism of gospel rewrites in particular.  Then we will turn our attention to novels, poems, plays, and possibly a film or two, in which either key elements of the Jesus stories or those stories in their disparate entirety have been appropriated from the gospel texts for contemporary purposes.  No prior knowledge of the relevant New Testament documents is necessary for this course.
