This course teaches the theory and practice of cross-cultural communication with an emphasis on writing for international audiences. The goal of the course is to help students develop writing strategies and cultural knowledge to create effective professional documents for international audiences and to communicate effectively in cross-cultural business and professional contexts. The topics that will be explored in this course include written communication in English across cultures, document design for international audiences, collaborative writing between native speakers and non-native speakers of English, issues of translation and localization of technical and business documents, and cultural variables in cross-cultural business and professional communication. Students may incorporate knowledge, skills, and insights gained from this course into projects and professional contexts that involve working with and writing for people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
