Focused on both text and theory, this course investigates imaginative responses to many of the world-historical cultural movements of Diaspora-namely, the Jewish, the African, and the Hindu/Pakistani (the Partitioning of the Indian subcontinent). Therefore, we read representative texts that explore a range of different Diaspora experiences, as well as theory that deals with questions of mental, ideological and geographical location or space, nationalism and imagined communities, and hybrid cultural identities.
