In this course, we will study some of the most acclaimed English-language novels from around the world over the past thirty years. How do contemporary novels cross national and cultural borders? How do experiences of immigration and exile animate new literary forms? How does an emergent global literary marketplace generate opportunities but also pose challenges? Possible authors include: Kazuo Ishiguro, J. M. Coetzee, Zadie Smith, Arundhati Roy, Michael Ondaatje, Mohsin Hamid, Teju Cole, Aravind Adiga, Zoë Wicomb, and Anne Enright. In addition, this course will introduce students to the scholarly field of “global Anglophone literature” by exploring its key questions, concepts, and approaches.
