This course examines some of the thornier issues facing the writer of literary nonfiction. How do you balance research, experience, and imagination when creating “real” characters on the page? How do you develop yourself as a character on the page? We will discuss the deep complexity between the experiencing “I” and the narrative “eye” that shapes the story and provides perspective and meaning. Students will read a number of diverse texts representing different takes on this subject and produce their own new work as well. Students will also be encouraged to submit work to literary journals, contests, and publishers.
